Meet the Gurcay brothers, NASA’s new Turkish business partner

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded Turkish nanotechnology company Nanosilver a nanosilver project on Tuesday, which is conducting research and development at Teknopark in Istanbul, Turkey. 

The company was founded by two young brothers, Rona Gurcay (29 years old) and Tanra Gurcay (26 years old), to provide raw materials through the production of nano-precious metals.

The company previously won two other awards from the International Nanotechnology Conference and the Sixth World Conference on New Technology in the United States, paving the way for the Gulkai brothers to participate in NASA competitions. 

They scored 95 points from NASA out of 100 points; 36 different countries participated in the competition.

The brothers are currently working with NASA on two silver-based projects. Nanosilver will be responsible for providing nanotechnology to prevent microorganisms from contaminating other planets. It can also prevent bacteria and any kind or organism from returning to the earth.

In an interview with TRT World, the Gurcay brothers stated that their goal is to be able to reach society and influence people, not to be driven by profit, because their nanosilver journey started with a dream.

“We are looking for the right place at the right time. We hope to use deep technologies that can be used in different fields, which can be produced in our country using domestic and national technologies,” said Rona Gurcay.

"Through deep-layer powdered metals, we can produce nano-sized different precious metal powders. As the pandemic progresses, the production of nano-silver has accelerated because silver has been used for its antibacterial and antiviral properties since ancient Egypt," Tanra Gurcay added.

Recalling the inspirational story behind the use of silver in ancient Egypt, the Gurkai people said that this metal has inherent antibacterial properties.

"We combine this ancient knowledge with deep technology. When silver is reduced to nano size, it actually becomes more powerful and sustainable antibacterial and antifungal properties. Nano size is the smallest size that can penetrate all Apply the smallest details on the surface and keep the effect for weeks." 

When asked what inspired them to invent the product, they said: “We have been using nano silver for many years. We have personal hygiene problems. Due to our hygiene phobia, we brought them from Australia through my aunt Nano silver products have found a permanent sanitary solution." 

"Nano silver is the most advanced sanitary product. Of course, it has a wider range of applications, in space, in terms of health, but sanitation is one of them. Our dream is to expose it as an attempt to appear at the right time and place. . In order to protect people from infection, as the people who know the infection best, we decided to take such a measure," Tanra Gurcay said. 

The brothers emphasized the support of their families in this process. They believe that the establishment of a successful company like Nanosilver, from its birth to its current form, from incubation to production, depends on entrepreneurship.

"From day one, our family has been very supportive during all this insomnia."

"We have begun to study nanotechnology to bring precious metal products to nanoscale. We want to contribute to the pandemic starting with nanosilver. We have also begun to cooperate with the Istanbul Technical University (ITU) while trying to produce nanosilver. Our team Composed of scholars there. Nanotechnology is an academic field that universities all over the world are researching, and ITU is Turkey’s most mature institution in this field. The lecturer we work with is a lecturer who has won a science Oscar," Rona Gurcay said.

Tanra explained that the difference between their products and other products is that they have developed a unique production technology, developed using natural and ecological methods, and adopted domestic technology. 

"This allows us to produce real nanomaterials with a purity of 99.99%, without waste residues and chemicals during or after the reaction," the brothers said.

Due to their unique method, there are no chemical wastes and toxic wastes in their materials. This is why they won the Best Research of the Year Award at the International Nanotechnology Conference and the World New Technology Conference.

As we all know, nano-silver has been used in space exploration activities for several years and plays a vital role.

"Once the surface is covered with nanosilver, no organisms can settle on the surface. Even in astronaut clothing, nanosilver is the most advanced disinfection and sanitation product because the space station has no washing facilities."

“Once the nano-coating is coated with silver, it can provide 99.99% hygiene rate within 4 to 6 months. Even in the harshest conditions of the surface area, it can last 99.99% for at least 15 days, in fact it lasts Up to 1 month, but for prevention purposes, 15 days is more accurate. Nano-silver products form a nano-sized barrier to prevent future viruses, bacteria and fungi from forming habitats," they told TRT World.

"This is important to our lovely country. It is used in many different products, from the defense industry to food protection, self-hygiene, etc."

The Gurcay brothers argued that no one in the world could produce the level of purity they reached, and claimed that its purity, naturalness and free of any chemical substances set them apart from similar products. 

"We produce it under long-lasting, effective conditions. We decided to release Nano Silver Spray, which we produced during the pandemic. We made it compatible with body pH. Initially it appeared as a surface product, but used The formula is because it is compatible with body pH. In Turkey, we applied it to various vehicles to try. At the end of 15 days, the application area is still as much as the operating room environment," Tanra Gurcay said.  

Rona Gurcay added that due to its manufacturing technology and size, it stays on the surface and is not affected by rain, rags and various things. 

"When you apply it to your hands, your hands will be fully protected by Silver Shield until the next time you wash your hands. We sent these products to internationally recognized laboratories, especially those working on Covid-19 And our products have an effective rate of 99.99% against Covid-19."

Talking about future plans, the two said they wanted to contribute to the Turkish Space Agency.

In addition, they suggested that they can also produce DSA (MMO) titanium electrode technology that is produced in a limited number of places on the earth.

"Even some countries do not allow the purchase of this material because it is also used to produce hydrogen. We have produced it and the test results have been very successful," they said. 

"It is produced at half price in Turkey. Compared with its imported counterparts, it has a price advantage and our supply is much faster. It has antibacterial properties and most importantly, these electrodes can work in an acidic environment," Gurcay brothers added road.
